One of my favorite Christmas hymns is Hark the Herald Angels Sing. We can debate if angels actually sang in the Bible (does it really say that?), but we certainly know that angels were the channel through whom God communicated to major characters in the Christmas account.

Everything God said to Zechariah, Joseph, Mary, and the shepherds happened just as He said. In other words, God speaks; it happens.

  • Joseph, take Mary as your wife and call your son Jesus. It happened.
  • Zechariah, you’re going to have a son who will make ready for the Lord a people prepared.  It happened.
  • Mary, you’re going to conceive by the Holy Spirit and birth the Messiah. It happened.
  • Shepherds, you’re going to find the Savior wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in the manger. It happened.

Let the angels at Christmas time remind you of the power of the Word of God. Trust His promises. Be comforted by the truth of His Word. Heed His warnings. Obey His commands.

Because this has always been God’s pattern from the very beginning. He speaks, it happens.

Pastors – the temptation every Christmas season is to preach in some creative way so that the same message isn’t boring every year for your congregation. Be creative, but your words will never be as powerful as God’s! Give your church time to hear from the powerful Word of God.

This Christmas season, trust the Word. Your life needs it. Your church needs it. Our state needs it.

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10–11, ESV)
