SCBI’s Disaster Relief Unit RC012 was on the move in Sullivan, Indiana’s Strike Zone. The Impacted Area was practically in West Central Baptist Association’s backyard.
As children of God, we responded where people were hurting, lives were disrupted, and indescribable loss caused despair; all in a couple of minutes, and the destruction changed people’s lives forever.
When it was “safe” for volunteers to work and areas were opened up, we were assigned a sector and started sawing downed trees, clearing brush and debris of all types. Our assessment team was working hard to keep us supplied with jobs. Dumpsters were plentiful; skid steers and excavators were clearing all manner of rubble.
Our 20 volunteers worked to complete 16 BIG jobs and accumulated 490 hours of work. There were nine work orders written that were beyond our capabilities. We had requests that were for the most unexpected thing… I NEVER want to hear again, “Can you get my house put into dumpsters?” Our team helped that happen in several cases.
Even though we grew weary of seeing other people’s misery, the folks we helped mostly had a positive outlook and were so very appreciative. We were humbled by our experience there but were honored to be “serving Christ in crisis,” as the SBDR motto states.
Our service is only possible because of your prayer support. We NEED prayer partners like YOU praying for us as we go. I am so thankful for you! Special thanks to Northwood Baptist Church in Sullivan for all their support; they never said “no” to anything we asked. Please hold Pastor David Bright and his wife Nancy in your prayers as David’s health is deteriorating and Nancy needs wisdom and strength. Thanks to you all!
