By Dr. Reginald Fletcher
Living Word Baptist Church was founded 34 years ago with the dream to be a true community church. Our focus has been to infect those around us with the Gospel. God has allowed us to enhance people’s lives with His vision to build a people for Him. As we look to 2024 and beyond, the commitment is to empower our church and community using a 3-pillar focus addressing: Housing and Homelessness, Mental Wellness, and Community Engagement.
These three points of contact for God’s people drive the meaning of ministry for Living Word.
- Addressing Housing and People in Homelessness; Providence Place apartments (to be completed in January 2024)
- Mental Health is critical in our community; we are developing a Mental Wellness Hub to give people a place to be empowered.
- Leaning on the Great Commission ( Matthew 28:19-20) to engage and equip our community with resources and opportunities to improve their lives
Twenty years ago, God gave Rev. Dr. Reginald B. Fletcher a vision to develop our neighborhood. We began acquiring property to expand the church and build a new place to worship. We have opened a Community Development Corporation (CDC), A Place Empowering People (PEP), to extend our reach into every aspect of people’s lives. That has led to housing for persons needing an affordable home; over the years, we have developed community partners to better meet the congregation’s spiritual and overall community needs.
Today, after a building vision, we are opening a 15-unit apartment building to house homeless veterans and low-income individuals with a beautiful place to call home in partnership with Englewood Community Development Corporation. We also own several other homes for rental and ministry. Our ministry houses a mental health hub where people can receive therapy assistance and counseling and a food pantry for a balanced meal, and we are engaged with our Otterbein neighborhood association to raise the dignity of our residents. We have been able to promote a practical approach to sharing the gospel by ministering to the whole man. Our vision is not just to be a church in the community but a church of the community by investing the resources God has blessed us with and looking for a Kingdom return on the investment. We are now being considered for a Send Relief Affiliate to partner with North American Mission Board (NAMB) and International Mission Board (IMB), in strengthening communities as one of five focus areas of ministry.
We are presently in the midst of a fund-raising campaign (Gideon Giving) to raise $100,000.00 to support the continued work of the ministry in our community to break the cycle of poverty and push back the darkness to shine the light of Christ.
Living Word is the church “Where the Word of God Comes Alive.” Our foundation is scripture, teaching and preaching is our purpose, and fellowship is our aim for God’s glory. Our mission is to “Empower the Community by Exalting the Savior, Equipping the Saints, Evangelizing the Sinner, and Enlightening Hearts and Minds to the Glory of God.”
